Bangalore City India
Bangalore, India was once known by different names like ‘pensioner’s paradise’, ‘Garden city’, Pub city and so on but now it has fast gained the adage ‘Silicon city’ of India because of the fast growing IT industry. However the history of the city has an interesting and humble beginning. There is a legend about how the King Veeraballa of Vijaynagara kingdom once lost his way in a forest – hungry and thirsty he found a hut with an old woman who kindly gave him “Benda Kalu’ or baked beans and the King found the food much tastier than any food he had ever tasted so he named the place Benda Kala Ooru’ or the place of baked beans and in time the name underwent different changes and finally came to be called ‘Bangalore’. In recent times though there was an announcement to change the name to ‘Benagaluru’.
Bangalore, India is the capital city of the Southern state of Karnataka and is considered the fastest growing cosmopolitan city in Asia/ But sometime back what attracted people to the city was its salubrious climate that was the reason why it was called a ‘pensioner’ paradise’ because many people loved to settle in the city after their retirement for a quite life. The city is also famous for the various gardens, parks and numerous lakes. However with the development of the IT industry some of the parks and lakes have given way to huge housing and commercial complexes but the city still maintains its old charm in many places. Development has also meant that shopping malls have sprung up in various places but the city was already known for its various pubs some of which are hundred years and older and the old pubs have undergone changes and new ones boast of world-class décor and ambience.
The food culture in Bangalore is as vibrant as the city itself and you can be sure to find humble eateries that cater to the local people with Masala dosa at the same time you can also find other cuisines like Mexican, Italian, American, Chinese, Thai and even Japanese themed restaurants where you can sample some of the best fares of each cuisine. The Mavalli Tiffin Room (MTR) which serves vegetarian food and snacks is one of the most famous landmarks in Bangalore and every Bangalorean worth his salt has tasted their food at least once. North Indian, Muslim, and South Indian cuisines also find equal patronage amongst the locals and the expat population of the city. The hotels of Bangalore also match some of the world-class five star hotels like the Taj Western, The Oberoi and ITC Gardenia. There are also plenty of other mid-budget, low-budget hotels that provide good accommodation for low price.
Bangalore, India is also home to the Kannada Film industry and is the fifth largest movie industry in India which releases over 80 movies a year. Some of the mega-stars enjoy cinematic and political popularity. The Indian Institute of Management or IIM is located in Bangalore and the Business Management and Marketing courses taught at the institute are recognized world over. The institute itself is located in a sprawling, green expanse which itself attracts visitors to look at the various flora and fauna. The city is also known for other gardens like Cubbon Park and Lal Bagh with its glass house and flower-display attracts thousands of visitors every year.
Bangalore city is also known for its silk and a trip to the city warrants purchase of ‘Mysore’ silk saris that are known for their beauty and purity. The city is also called ‘Stone’ City because of its natural granite deposits and other stone resources found around the city.
